The Ralph’s Transmission Diagnostic Process
When a customer comes into Ralph’s Transmission for a free initial transmission inspection, we use a three-phase diagnostics process (sometimes four, if necessary). Our process is designed to uncover the exact source of any problems. This way, we can more specific repair recommendations with accurate price estimates. Whether you need major transmission repairs or minor transmission maintenance, we want you to have a full picture of your vehicle’s transmission health. Then, you can make more informed decisions before authorizing us to perform any further services.
Road Test
When you drop off your vehicle at Ralph’s Transmission, one of our service advisors will ask you some questions. Please do your best to describe any problems you are experiencing. One of our technicians will ultimately perform a road test to try and replicate any issues you are describing. They are also well-trained to pick up on potential problems that you may not be noticing. This step is critical in helping to identify what may be wrong with your transmission—if anything.
Diagnostic Testing
We have advanced diagnostic testing technology at Ralph’s Transmission. Our system connects directly to your vehicle’s computer and will provide us with specific “fault codes” if your sensors are picking up any issues. Again, this is another key step we take to help narrow down the source of any transmission problems you may be experiencing.
External Inspection
Next, we perform an external inspection of the transmission along with a transmission fluid inspection. The level and quality of the transmission fluid can tell us a lot about the health of your transmission. If the level is low or the fluid itself is compromised (old, burnt, dirty, milky, etc.), we can know if there might be an internal problem. Sometimes, it simply means you are overdue for a standard transmission maintenance service. We will also physically inspect the transmission housing, transmission pan and fluid lines for any signs of fluid leaks or other damage.
Internal Inspection (If Necessary)
All of the inspection procedures above are performed for free at Ralph’s Transmission. If they reveal any issues that point to internal transmission damage, then we will recommend the next step: a full internal transmission inspection. This is an even more involved process because we have to remove the transmission from the vehicle, open it up and look inside for any signs of damage. If an internal inspection is required or recommended, our service team will walk you through that process and any additional costs involved.
This is a brief description of our transmission inspection and diagnostics processes. Once completed, we will provide you with a full inspection report, along with a breakdown of any recommended services.
