Is Your Truck Hesitating While Driving?
When you press the accelerator, you expect your truck to respond immediately. If it hesitates, feels sluggish or briefly loses power, something isn’t working properly. While hesitation can have several causes, transmission problems should be high on the list of possibilities. At Ralph’s Transmission in Modesto, we can help determine whether your transmission is behind the problem.
How Transmission Problems Cause Hesitation
Your transmission is responsible for transferring engine power to the wheels while selecting the appropriate gear for your speed and driving conditions. If it doesn’t engage correctly, you may feel a delay between pressing the accelerator and the truck responding.
Low or degraded transmission fluid is one potential cause. Without proper fluid levels and pressure, the transmission may struggle to engage or shift smoothly.
Worn internal clutches can also cause hesitation. If the clutches slip rather than engage firmly, engine RPM may increase without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed.
A failing torque converter can create similar symptoms by interfering with the transfer of power between the engine and transmission. Electronic problems involving sensors or shift solenoids can also affect when and how the transmission changes gears.
Pay Attention Under Heavy Loads
Hesitation may become particularly noticeable when towing, hauling or climbing hills. These situations place greater demands on the transmission and can expose problems that aren’t as obvious during normal driving.
For work trucks, ignoring hesitation can eventually lead to downtime and more extensive repairs.
Find the Cause Early
Because engine, fuel and electrical problems can also cause hesitation, accurate diagnosis is important. Ralph’s Transmission offers free diagnostic testing and external transmission inspections to determine whether your transmission is responsible.
If significant internal damage requires a rebuild, our shop specializes in custom transmission rebuilds backed by a 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty.
If your truck isn’t responding like it should, schedule an inspection with Ralph’s Transmission before hesitation becomes a bigger problem. Contact us today at 209.526.1909 or schedule your service appointment online.
