Is a Transmission Rebuild Necessary?
One of the most common questions we get at Ralph’s Transmission is after we recommend a full custom transmission rebuild to one of our customers. They inevitably ask: Is a transmission rebuild necessary? And yes, it is a very fair question to ask. If you do, you can always expect our service to provide an honest answer. It may depend on multiple factors, such as:
- Vehicle Make and Model
- Vehicle Age & Transmission Mileage
- Extent of Transmission Damage
Transmission Rebuild vs. Transmission Replacement
Ultimately, the extent of the damage is the most important. When there is extensive internal damage to your truck’s transmission that is beyond simple repairs, we’re usually left with two primary options: transmission rebuild or transmission replacement. If a transmission can be rebuilt, that is generally the recommended solution. It ensures you are keeping the same transmission in your vehicle. It is just being completely rebuilt and reinstalled to make it run like new again. This is why all Ralph’s Transmission rebuilds are backed by a strong 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty program.
A full transmission replacement is generally a more expensive option, especially if you go with a brand new OEM transmission unit. You can save money with a used or refurbished transmission, but that can come with significant risks. How well will it work with your vehicle, and how long will it really last?
However, it is important to understand that a transmission replacement may be the only viable option in certain cases. Modern CVT (continuously variable transmission) designs generally cannot be rebuild cost-effectively, so they typically need to be completely replaced. Some older transmissions with extremely high mileage may not be worth rebuilding if a suitable replacement can be found. Lastly, the damage can be so severe sometimes that replacing the entire transmission unit is the only solution to consider.
Transmission Rebuild vs. Transmission Repairs
Now, let’s consider the extent of the transmission damage and how that affects our transmission rebuild recommendations. In some cases, the problem can be caught early and the internal transmission damage is minimal. Certain components can be identified as the source of the trouble. Then, targeted repairs can be performed to replace any damaged parts.
In other cases, there is significant internal damage to multiple components. This happens every often because one damaged part tends to put excess strain on other parts, and numerous internal transmission problems can add up quickly. You might be able to save some money now by just replacing the most damaged components, but that may only be a temporary fix. You may be likely to continue experiencing more transmission problems in the future, eventually getting to a point where you have no choice but to replace or rebuild the transmission.
This is why when there is significant internal transmission damage, we generally recommend a full custom transmission rebuild. It is a better long-term solution. All issues are identified. All damaged/worn parts are replaced. Any healthy parts are professionally cleaned and reinstalled. Every single nut and bolt of the transmission unit is carefully inspected, and the entire unit is put back together one piece at a time. This process ensures quality results and long-term dependability. If more problems do occur, we have the 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty in place to provide protection and customer assurance.
So, is a transmission rebuild necessary? It really depends on all these factors and at Ralph’s Transmission, we’ll let you know all your options and exactly why we are recommending a transmission rebuild (or some other repair solutions) in your specific case.
