Do I Really Need a Transmission Fluid Flush?

There are different types of transmission maintenance services. The standard transmission service we perform most often at Ralph’s Transmission is similar to an oil change. We replace the transmission filter, drain the old transmission fluid and put in new transmission fluid. We will also replace the transmission pan gasket, if necessary. In many cases, we will remove and clean the transmission pan, as well, if there is a lot of gunk built up.

How Often Should I Get My Transmission Serviced?

When it comes to preventative transmission maintenance, a standard transmission service like this is generally all you will ever need. This service may need to be performed every 30,000-60,000 miles (sometime more) depending on the age, size and make of the vehicle. Your driving habits may also influence how often a transmission service is required. Vehicles that regularly carry or tow heavy loads or drive in a lot of stop-and-go city traffic will typically require transmission services more often than those that aren’t driven so hard.

Transmission Service vs. Fluid Flush

So, how does a transmission fluid flush differ from a standard transmission service? And, is it really necessary? The answer to the first question is simple. A transmission fluid flush is a more intensive process than a standard fluid change. It is more like a blood transfusion or dialysis. The transmission lines are connected to a specialized machine that drains the old fluid and sends a cleaning solution through the lines. The lines are fully cleaned out before all new transmission fluid is added.

Is a Fluid Flush Really Necessary?

The answer to the second question about transmission fluid flushes being necessary is a trickier one to answer. You will get many different opinions from different mechanics, transmission technicians and vehicle manufacturers. Some recommend it. Some don’t. At Ralph’s Transmission, we usually only see it as a recommended service in extreme cases where the lines are very clogged and/or the fluid is significantly burnt. It should never be the first option, but it is necessary when things are really bad inside the transmission lines. If the transmission fluid isn’t flowing correctly or is contaminated significantly, it will lead to transmission performance issues and eventually major internal damage.

For the most part, a standard transmission service will get the job done. The new filter and fresh fluid that is added will help naturally clean the lines and keep things flowing properly. We will typically recommend a standard service first. If problems persist, then we may consider a complete fluid flush as a next-level solution.
