3 Transmission Maintenance Tasks You Can Perform Yourself

Your truck’s transmission is crucial for a smooth driving experience. And while major repairs should be left to professionals, there are a few basic maintenance tasks you might be able handle yourself if you have the knowhow and confidence. These tasks can help keep your transmission in good shape and extend its life.

1. Check Transmission Fluid Levels
Transmission fluid is essential for lubricating and cooling the transmission’s internal components. To check the fluid, locate the transmission dipstick under the hood. Refer to your owner’s manual if necessary. Pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again to check the level. If it’s low, you can add the appropriate type of transmission fluid, making sure not to overfill. Definitely make sure you are using the proper fluid or it can cause serious internal damage. Regularly checking the fluid can help you catch problems early and ensure your transmission operates smoothly.

2. Inspect for Transmission Fluid Leaks
Transmission fluid leaks can lead to serious problems if left unattended. Periodically inspect the ground under your car for any reddish or brownish fluid spots. If you find any, inspect the transmission pan, gaskets and seals for signs of leakage. If you’re confident in your DIY skills, you may be able to replace a faulty gasket or seal. However, if the leak seems more complicated or you’re unsure, it’s always best to consult a local transmission repair specialist.

3. Change the Transmission Filter
All vehicles have a transmission filter that needs periodic replacement to keep the fluid clean and debris-free. To replace it, you will need to drain the transmission fluid, remove the transmission pan, and swap out the old filter for a new one. Be sure to follow your vehicle’s service manual closely. If you’re not comfortable with this level of maintenance, don’t have the proper tools and workspace, or if your vehicle doesn’t have a serviceable filter, it’s wise to seek help from a professional. This is not something you want to attempt on your own without the right knowledge and resources.

While these tasks can be done at home, more complex transmission maintenance should always be handled by a qualified transmission specialist. If you’re unsure about any issue, a professional inspection can prevent costly repairs and ensure your transmission remains in top condition.
