How to Identify a Transmission Fluid Leak

A transmission fluid leak can be a serious problem. It may be happening because of a worn seal, loose connection or cracked fluid line. Or, it could be the sign of a significant internal transmission issue like a failing torque converter. There are numerous signs that can tell you when you might have a transmission fluid leak, or if your fluid is too low, dirty, contaminated or old and needs to be replaced.

At the first sign of any transmission fluid trouble, you should get your vehicle inspected by a transmission specialist like Ralph’s Transmission. A certified technician can determine the source of the problem and recommend the necessary maintenance or repair services. Ignoring a transmission fluid leak or other transmission issue is a bad idea. You are risking internal damage and could be facing costly repairs—perhaps even a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Here are some of the signs of a transmission fluid leak:

Puddles

The obvious sign for any automotive fluid leak is a puddle forming underneath your vehicle. Most automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is bright red in color, and can also be identified based on the location. If it’s under the center of the vehicle where the transmission is situated and the color is a match, then it’s likely a transmission fluid leak. A puddle means there is a major leak, so you’ll want to get it checked out ASAP.

Smaller Leaks

You may not notice a smaller transmission fluid leak unless you can look under your vehicle at the transmission housing and fluid lines. You may find some wet or dried fluid around the exterior of the transmission or fluid lines. This could be a minor issue like needing to replace your pan gasket, or it could be the start of something bigger.

Low Transmission Fluid Level

If you check your transmission fluid level and it’s lower than it should be, you may have a leak or another problem worth getting inspected by an expert.

Burning Smell

A sweet burning smell or melting plastic odor could be a sign of transmission fluid issues. It is leaking or the fluid is old and getting burnt. You may be overdue for a transmission service to replace the fluid before it starts causing more internal problems.

Shifting Issues

Speaking of internal problems, low, burnt or contaminated transmission fluid will leak to shifting issues. Your transmission may slip between gears, have trouble shifting into certain gears or experience excessive grinding. Sluggish acceleration is another common symptom of low transmission fluid or internal problems.

Strange Sounds

Whining, grinding, vibrating and clunking are all sounds you may hear when you have a transmission problem like low or leaking fluid.

Transmission Overheating

Your check engine light or transmission temperature warning light could illuminate—or your vehicle’s computer may offer a specific transmission warning message. These are signs that you should be your transmission inspected soon to avoid more significant problems.

These are some of the most common signs of transmission fluid leaks and other transmission fluid issues. If you think you might have a problem with your transmission in the Central Valley, call Ralph’s Transmission at 209.526.1909 or schedule your service appointment online.
