5 Signs of Transmission Cooler Problems
The transmission cooling plays a critical role in keeping your transmission fluid at an optimal temperature. Many trucks and heavy duty vehicles will have an auxiliary transmission cooler, as well, to help keep the transmission from overheating when carrying heavy loads. When working properly, it can help prevent overheating and extend the life of your transmission. When a transmission cooler malfunctions, however, it can lead to serious issues. Here are some common signs of transmission cooler problems:
1. Overheating Transmission
If your transmission fluid is constantly running hot, it may be a sign that the cooler is not working efficiently. You might notice warning lights on the dashboard, or your vehicle could go into “limp mode” to prevent further damage.
2. Transmission Fluid Leaks
A damaged cooler or faulty connections can result in fluid leaks. If you notice reddish or brown fluid pooling underneath your vehicle, it’s likely a transmission fluid leak. This leak may stem from the cooler or another part of the transmission system. You will want to get it inspected by a transmission expert as soon as possible to prevent further transmission damage.
3. Burning Smell
An overheating transmission cooler can cause the transmission fluid to overheat and burn, producing a strong odor. Like a fluid leak, this is a serious issue that requires immediate attention.
4. Slipping Gears
A poorly functioning transmission cooler may cause a lack of fluid pressure, which can often lead to slipping gears. This results in erratic shifting and reduced power to the wheels.
5. Increased Transmission Noise
Whining, grinding, or other unusual noises may signal that your transmission cooler isn’t keeping the fluid cool enough, leading to excess wear on the transmission.
If you experience any of these issues, you may need to clean or repair the cooler. Or, there could be another serious transmission problem worth getting repaired. Flushing the cooler is a common service to remove contaminants and restore cooler performance. For repairs, replacing damaged lines or connectors may also help resolve leaks. Upgrading to a larger or high-performance cooler—or installing an auxiliary transmission cooler—may be additional solutions to consider in order to improve cooling efficiency. This is especially true with heavy-duty vehicles or high-performance applications.
