Are Your Automatic Transmission Gears Grinding?
Grinding gears is a common problem with manual transmission vehicles. It usually happens when you don’t shift smoothly or are experiencing clutch problems. When you hear grinding gears in your automatic transmission vehicle, it may be a more serious issue. An automatic transmission is designed to shift relatively smoothly between gears. If the gears are making a noticeable grinding sound (especially if it’s at certain speeds or in certain gears), you should pay attention. Persistent grinding is worth getting your transmission inspected by a specialist. You may be able to catch a potential problem before it gets worse.
Ignoring minor transmission issues is a recipe for disaster. Small problems like low or old transmission fluid can quickly develop into internal transmission damage. This can ultimately lead to complete transmission failure. Then, you may be facing a very expensive transmission repair, rebuild or replacement.
Here are some of the reasons why your automatic transmission gears may be grinding:
Low Transmission Fluid
The most obvious culprit is usually the transmission fluid. You may hear some grinding gears or experience rougher shifting when the transmission fluid is old, low or contaminated. That means it is not lubricating the gears, clutches and other mechanisms properly. You may be overdue for a transmission service to replace the fluid and filter. Or, it could be the sign of a more serious transmission issue.
Gear Damage
Grinding gear sounds could also happen if there is damage or misalignment happening between certain gears. These are internal problems that need further inspection and specialized repairs. Some parts may need to be replaced and the gearbox may need to be rebuilt.
Torque Converter Failure
The torque converter is what controls the shifting in an automatic transmission system. Unfortunately, it is a sensitive piece of equipment that can become damaged or worn. In that case, you will start noticing various shifting issues. Grinding gears could be a sign of torque converter failure.
Other Mechanical Damage
There are various parts and mechanisms that play important roles in automatic shifting. Failing transmission solenoids, worn transmission linkages, maladjusted bindings and damaged clutch plates can all lead to transmission problems and rough shifting.
These are some of the issues that can lead to grinding gears and numerous other signs of transmission problems. If you think you might have a transmission issue in the Central Valley, call Ralph’s Transmission today at 209-526-1909 or schedule your service appointment online.
