6 Signs of a Damaged Transfer Case
The transfer case is one of the key components of four-wheel-drive (4WD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) trucks and SUVs. It controls drive power from the transmission to all four wheels and is what enables you to get superior traction in difficult terrains. A damaged or failing transfer case can cause numerous problems, including shifting difficulties and handling challenges that may make the vehicle unsafe to drive.
If you drive a 4WD or AWD vehicle, it’s important to understand the function of the transfer case and identify when it might be having potential issues. Here are some of the signs of transfer case damage you can look for:
1. Trouble Shifting
If you are experiencing trouble shifting between gear ranges, it could likely be a transfer case problem—especially if you are having difficulty when engaged in 4WD/AWD functionality. Shifting issues could also be traced back to the primary transmission or a linkage concern, so it is a good idea to get your vehicle inspected by a transmission expert who also has experience dealing with transfer cases.
2. Slipping Out of 4WD
A common transfer case problem is when it has trouble staying engaged in 4WD. This is often a clear sign of transfer case damage because it isn’t affecting anything in regular drive mode.
3. 4WD Won’t Engage/Disengage
Another transfer case problem we see is when the vehicle won’t engage in 4WD mode, or it stays stuck in that mode and refuses to shift back to normal drive functionality.
4. Fluid Leak
If there is a leak of transmission fluid or oil under your vehicle, it could be coming from the transfer case. Any fluid leaks should be taken very seriously, so get your truck checked out as soon as possible.
5. 4WD/AWD Warning Light
Most four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles will have special dashboard warning lights or computer sensors to let you know when there is a problem with the 4WD/AWD system. The trouble can generally be traced back to the transfer case if no other check engine or primary transmission warnings are displaying.
6. Grinding, Growling or Humming
Pay attention if you hear any strange noises coming from your truck or SUV. This can be the sign of various automotive problems, but could potentially be a transfer case issue if you drive a 4WD/AWD vehicle. If the sound varies based on vehicle speed, certain gear engagements or 4WD mode, then it is likely the transmission or transfer case to blame.
