5 of the Most Common Heavy Duty Truck Transmission Problems
There’s nothing better than having a heavy duty truck you can rely on for everything you need to do. You need to utilize the truck every day for work, recreation, family activities and many other purposes. Unfortunately, many heavy duty trucks are put through a lot and this can put extra strain on the transmission system. Proper maintenance and good driving habits will help minimize the risk of transmission issues, but problems can still occur with these bigger, heavier trucks.
Here are some of the most common heavy duty truck transmission problems we see at Ralph’s Transmission:
1. Transmission Fluid Leaks
Transmission fluid leaks are often the sign of a more significant internal transmission problem. In some cases, it may just mean you need a new transmission pan gasket and are overdue for a standard transmission service. In other cases, a leak could occur because of a failing gearbox, torque converter or other components inside the transmission housing. It’s best to get a transmission leak inspected by a transmission specialist. You may be able to catch a minor problem early on, before it develops into something worse. Low transmission fluid can cause all sorts of damage. You may also notice a burning smell if your transmission fluid is too low or if it and the filter need replacing.
2. Shifting Problems
You may experience any number of different shifting problems in your heavy duty truck. These are all signs of transmission issues you should get addressed sooner than later. Examples including slipping between gears, not shifting into certain gears, or heavy grinding or clunking noises during shifting. These issues should not be ignored.
3. Sluggish Acceleration
One thing we hear a lot from customers is that their trucks feel unusually “sluggish.” They are slow to respond and accelerate, and upshifting into higher gears seems to take longer than normal. This is commonly associated with a transmission problem. It could be the engine or something else, but in most cases it is the transmission to blame for sluggish acceleration.
4. Failing Torque Converter
If your heavy duty truck has an automatic transmission, the torque converter is one of the internal components most likely to fail. It controls the automatic shifting. The power and torque required to move a big truck tends to put more strain on the torque converter and it can fail, leading to some of the issues as described above.
5. Failing Transfer Case
Though not part of the main transmission unit, the transfer case plays a very important role in transferring power to each individual wheel in a 4-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive truck. If it fails, you will certainly start to notice some problems. If you experience shifting or power issues only when engaged in 4WD or AWD mode, then the transfer case is likely to blame.
