What to Look for in a Transmission Repair Warranty

An outside look at a car part outside of the vehicle.Whether you are getting major transmission repairs or just having certain parts replaced, you will want to ask your repair provider about any warranties attached. Specific parts may come with a manufacturer warranty. Services performed by the transmission repair shop might also be covered in case you experience further problems down the road. Here are a few tips to help you get better information regarding your transmission repair warranty coverage:

Ask Questions

Never be afraid to ask questions at the transmission shop or auto repair shop who is providing the repair or maintenance services. Ask if there is a warranty on the parts or services. Make sure you understand what is covered and what is not in case you do experience future issues. And, you will also want to learn about the length of the coverage, along with any other details that could potentially affect you. Ideally, you will want to ask these questions before you authorize repairs. Hopefully you never have to use the warranty, but it’s good to know as much as you can before you get the work done.

Transmission Warranty vs. Drivetrain Warranty

Your vehicle will have an original warranty from the manufacturer. That only last so long and will have limitations. Along the way, you may have options to buy extended warranty programs. A common one sold is drivetrain warranty, which will include some transmission coverage. This is something you may want to look into if you have a heavy duty truck or vehicle that experiences higher-than-average strain on the transmission. It could save you serious money if you do have transmission problems. Otherwise, a transmission warranty would generally be attached to transmission-specific repairs. If you get your transmission rebuilt or replaced, you will want to ask about the transmission warranty that comes with that major service.

Parts vs. Service

We mentioned it before, but it is worth reiterating. Some parts may be covered by manufacturer warranties. Some services may be covered by the service provider. It’s important to understand the differences and how you would need to deal with the warranty claim if something does happen. A good transmission shop will usually help you figure out any warranty claims on parts—especially if they installed them. Naturally, they probably wouldn’t honor a warranty from another shop if they didn’t provide the previously warrantied service. In other words, if you get your transmission rebuilt at one place, you will need to take it back to that place to take advantage of any warranty benefits.

Upfront Information

You can ask all the questions you want to find out what you need to know. Ideally, they will provide you with this information upfront so you don’t have to ask that many questions. At Ralph’s Transmission, we are very transparent about our warranty programs. For instance, we offer a 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty program on all transmission rebuilds we perform at our Modesto shop. Our service team will be very clear about how the warranty works and exactly what it will cover if you experience further problems within the coverage window. Most of our transmission repair services come with warranties to help give you additional peace of mind. We will explain what warranty is attached to any specific service you receive at our shop. We will also let you know if any new parts we used have warranties. And, of course, you are always welcome to ask any questions!
