THE IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINE TRANSMISSION MAINTENANCE

Most people are typically pretty good at remembering to get their oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles. However, not everybody is as diligent about other common maintenance issues. One of the most important maintenance needs of every vehicle is often completely overlooked, which usually leads to bigger problems in the future.

What is a Standard Transmission Service?

We’re talking of course about transmission service. Just like your oil and oil filter need to be changed periodically, so do your transmission fluid and transmission filter. This will keep your transmission components properly lubricated and help keep it running well over time. The good news is that standard transmission service isn’t required as often as your basic oil change. Most manufacturers will recommend it every 30,000-60,000 miles. The interval may vary depending on the type of vehicle and the overall health of the transmission. The transmissions of older vehicles should be inspected more often because problems are more likely to happen as time goes on.

DIY Maintenance

What many people don’t realize is that you can check the level and quality of your transmission fluid rather easily. There is a separate dipstick in your engine compartment that allows you to do a quick check just like you can for your regular engine oil. Transmission fluid is typically bright red in color. If it appears very thick or dark, or if the level is low, it could be a sign of a bigger transmission problem. Sometimes, it’s just a small leak that can be fixed with a new transmission pan or gasket. Either way, you’ll want to trust your transmission to specialists.

Ralph’s Transmission – The Central Valley Transmission Specialists

With a standard transmission service at Ralph’s Transmission, we will replace the transmission filter and transmission fluid, while also performing an external inspection of the pan, pan gasket and other components to make sure there are no leaks or corrosion. If it looks like there may be bigger concerns at hand, we may recommend a diagnostic test or full internal inspection to make sure we get to the root of the problem. If additional repairs are needed or a full rebuild is recommended, we will walk you through the process and prices involved. Ralph’s Transmission may also recommend a complete fluid flush, which is more involved than a standard fluid change. We want to make sure you make informed decisions before any repairs are authorized.

When it comes to maintaining your vehicle for optimal performance and a longer lifespan, don’t neglect your transmission. It is one of the most important parts of your car and, at the very least, you’ll want to get standard transmission services performed as needed.
