What Your Check Engine Light Really Means

The check engine light is something we all dread to see when driving. It is one of those little annoyances we all have to deal with at some point, but it’s there for a reason. It generally comes on when the vehicle’s computer detects something wrong. In fact, it could help you catch a problem early on. You may need minor repairs or no repairs at all, but you may also be able to avoid a major repair.

So, what does the check engine light actually represent? Is it always an engine problem? Is it something you can ignore? What should you do when it comes on?

The Purpose of the Check Engine Light

The first thing to understand is that the check engine light does not necessarily represent an engine problem. It is essentially a “catch all” warning from your truck’s computer system. Your truck has many different sensors and control modules. Sometimes, one of the sensors simply fails and this can trip the check engine light. The sensor itself may need to be replaced or adjusted. In other cases, a sensor detects something abnormal and the check engine light is there to let the driver know that something might be wrong.

What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?

The check engine light could illuminate because of an engine, transmission, cooling system, fuel system, exhaust system or electrical/battery problem. At Ralph’s Transmission, we commonly see it come on because of transmission and drivetrain issues. Sometimes it is paired with another transmission warning light or computer message. Often times, it’s just the check engine light by itself. If it is on and you notice any other signs of transmission problems (sluggish acceleration, slipping/grinding gears, not engaging into gear, etc.), then there’s a very good chance it’s a transmission issue that may require the expertise of a transmission specialist to diagnose and repair.

Diagnostic Testing & Transmission Inspection

We use sophisticated diagnostic testing equipment at Ralph’s Transmission to help determine the specific problems. We can connect directly to your truck’s computer and look for fault codes. This narrows down the problem. Along with road testing and physical transmission inspections, we can get to the source of the issue. If it is a transmission or drive train problem, we can help with the necessary repair recommendations. If it is the engine or something else, we will gladly refer you to a general auto repair shop.

If your check engine light does come on, do not wait too long to get your vehicle checked out. You could be saving yourself thousands in repairs if you catch a minor issue early on. If your check engine light is illuminated and you are noticing any transmission issues at all, bring your truck into Ralph’s Transmission for free diagnostics and inspection services.
