What Metal Shavings in Transmission Fluid Could Mean

A mechanic, wearing work clothes and gloves, pours transmission fluid from a container into a transparent funnel that is inserted into an open car engine.Finding metal shavings in transmission fluid can be concerning, but it doesn’t always mean your transmission is about to fail. Transmissions contain numerous metal components that experience friction and wear throughout their service life. The amount, size and type of material found can help indicate whether you’re seeing normal wear or a potentially serious problem.

Is Some Metal Material Normal?

A very small amount of fine metallic material can accumulate over time as transmission components naturally wear. Many transmissions have magnets in the pan specifically designed to collect these tiny particles and keep them from circulating through the system.

A light coating of fine metallic residue on the magnet during routine service isn’t necessarily cause for alarm, particularly on a transmission that has accumulated significant mileage.

Larger particles, excessive buildup or noticeable metal fragments are a different story. These can indicate accelerated wear or damage to internal components such as gears, bearings, bushings or other hard parts. If the fluid is also dark or burnt, or the vehicle is slipping, shifting roughly or making unusual noises, a professional inspection becomes especially important.

Don’t Guess About Internal Wear

Metal in the fluid can provide valuable clues, but determining where it came from requires transmission expertise. Simply changing the fluid won’t correct an internal mechanical problem that is already developing.

At Ralph’s Transmission in Modesto, our technicians can inspect the fluid, evaluate transmission performance and determine whether additional diagnosis or repair is necessary. Catching abnormal wear early may help prevent additional components from becoming damaged.

If significant internal wear has already occurred, Ralph’s also specializes in custom transmission rebuilds. Each transmission is carefully disassembled and inspected so damaged parts can be identified and replaced. Our transmission rebuilds are backed by a 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty.

If you’ve discovered metal in your transmission fluid, contact Ralph’s Transmission today at 209.526.1909 for a professional diagnosis and find out what your transmission is telling you. You can also schedule your appointment online.
