WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEAR’S TRANSMISSION RESOLUTIONS?
Transmission maintenance and repairs are things that most people only think about after a transmission problem occurs. However, major transmission repairs, custom rebuilds and full-on transmission replacements can obviously be expensive.
Transmission care should always be on your mind and there are preventative maintenance steps you can take to keep your transmission running its best. Here are some New Year’s Transmission Resolutions you should make in 2018:
Regular Transmission Service
A standard transmission service is recommended for most vehicles every 30,000-60,000 miles depending on the make and model. This will change out your transmission fluid and filter to keep things clean and properly lubricated within the transmission assembly.
Consider a Transmission Fluid Flush
A complete transmission fluid flush is more involved than a standard fluid/filter change, but sometimes it is recommended if the fluid in your transmission is getting gunky or corroded. Think of it like a full blood transfusion where all the old fluid is removed and replaced with fresh, clean fluid.
Parts Cleaning
Life on the road can build up a lot of dirt, grime and grease on key transmission parts. They can be cleaned and reinstalled to keep things working as well as possible.
Seals and Pan Gasket
You should have the rear engine seal and other seals, along with the transmission pan gasket, checked periodically to make sure the material is in good shape and the seals are strong. Fluid leaks can lead to major transmission problems.
Driving Habits
As a driver, you can somewhat control the strain that is put on your transmission every day. If you drive hard (accelerating fast or coming to abrupt stops), carry heavy loads, tow trailers or push the vehicle too much while the engine is cold, you could be putting additional strain on your transmission. Just be mindful of your driving habits to help your transmission last as long as possible.
