This is always a good question and there is some debate in the automotive world. Some will recommend every 30,000 miles. Others might say 50,000-60,000. Some say you don’t need it for 100,000 miles or more. There probably is no right answer because there are so many different opinions.

In most cases, we simply recommend following the mileage as outlined in your owner’s manual. Different manufacturers have different recommendations for transmission fluid replacement, and also whether your car has an automatic or manual transmission can impact the desired frequency.

The important thing to keep in mind is that transmission fluid does need to be flushed at some point if you’ve had your car for several years. It will need to be replaced with new fluid that’s proper for your transmission. Other things to consider when new transmission fluid is installed are new filters, gaskets, pans and seals to prevent leaks or contaminants in your system. A good mechanic or transmission specialist will know when those other parts need replacement. If you are on a regular service schedule with your dealer, transmission fluid and filter replacements will probably be standard part of one of your “major” service visits once you’ve had the car for a while.

Vital Fluid

Transmission fluid is vital to the performance of your automobile. It helps cool the transmission, facilitate gear shifts and provides much-needed lubrication for various moving parts.

Now, some things can compound wear and tear on your transmission fluid. If you live in the city and are stuck in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, it will deteriorate quicker. If you are hauling large loads or towing trailers, it can also make things worse.

What to Look For

Transmission fluid is generally red in color, but can come in different hues. Make sure you know what the transmission fluid in your car is supposed to look like. Then, you’ll be able to detect leaks if you see that type of fluid under your car. Also, you can check the fluid in your transmission using a dipstick. If the color of your transmission fluid is darker than it’s supposed to be, you may want to have it checked out by a professional.
