5 Signs of Transmission Solenoid Problems

Your vehicle’s transmission is comprised of many components. If any one internal part fails, it could lead to serious transmission performance issues and further damage. At the first sign of any transmission problems, you should get your vehicle inspected by a transmission expert. It’s always best to diagnose and repair the failure early on, rather than waiting for the transmission to fail completely.

Solenoids are very critical components within a transmission system. Unfortunately, they can be a common failure point. This is why it’s important to understand what they do and how to recognize potential solenoid problems.

What is a Transmission Solenoid?

These small valves help control the transmission. They are electro-hydraulic valves that control the flow of automatic transmission fluid as the vehicle is shifting during acceleration or deceleration. There are three main types of transmission solenoids:

  1. Transmission Shift Solenoid
  2. Lockup Solenoid
  3. Transmission Control Solenoid

If one or all of these solenoids fails or isn’t performing correctly, you will experience transmission issues and other internal damage could occur. Everything needs to work in perfect harmony within a transmission system. One small problem can lead to much bigger problems if left ignored. Here are some of the most common signs of transmission solenoid failure:

1. Delayed Shifting or Slipping Gears

You may notice that the transmission is slow to shift when accelerating, or it may slip between gears. This could be a torque converter issue, as well, but a faulty solenoid might be to blame.

2. Unable to Downshift

Another common solenoid problem is when the vehicle won’t downshift during deceleration. The engine may continue to rev, even when you hit the brakes. This usually means one of the solenoid valves might be sticking or damaged.

3. Won’t Shift into Gear

You may find it difficult to get the vehicle to shift out of neutral and into a forward or reverse gear. Again, this could be the sign of any number of internal transmission failures, including a faulty solenoid valve.

4. Rough Shifting

Grinding gears and rough shifting are other common signs of solenoid failures. Most automatic transmission vehicles will shift smoothly when everything is working correctly. Rough shifting is a common sign of a problem.

5. Check Engine Light

Yes, the check engine light often comes on because of a transmission issue. The transmission solenoids are connected to multiple sensors and computer controls. If one should fail, your check engine light and other warning messages may come up.
