Roy owns a 2002 Ford Excursion with well over 200,000 miles on it. He was recently driving it on a long uphill grade when he noticed that it really seemed to be struggling. The SUV didn’t have its normal power. The transmission started running hot, as well. Roy eventually reached his destination and checked the transmission fluid level. It was low, so he refilled it with fresh fluid. Even then, the vehicle still felt like it wasn’t running right. That’s when Roy called Ralph’s Transmission.
We arranged for a complimentary tow from his home in Lathrop down to our shop in Modesto, where our transmission technicians performed a road test, ran diagnostics and completed an external inspection of the Excursion’s transmission. Several issues were found immediately. The road test confirmed that the vehicle was having problems shifting between 1st and 2nd gear because the torque converter was slipping. Diagnostic tests revealed multiple fault codes. Last but not least, there was a serious transmission fluid leak.
The next step was to remove and dismantle the transmission in order to perform a full internal inspection. The torque converter had failed completely and then caused some additional internal damage. Our recommendation was to rebuild the transmission.

The torque converter had to be replaced along with several other damaged components. Everything else was professionally cleaned and reinstalled piece by piece. Once the transmission rebuild was complete, it was reinstalled Roy’s Ford Excursion and road tested again to make sure it was running like new again.
