Troy recently brought his 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel into Ralph’s Transmission for a standard transmission service. The truck had over 200,000 miles on it and he knew it was due for maintenance—and maybe more. As we do with every vehicle that comes into our Modesto shop, our technicians performed an external transmission inspection, ran diagnostic tests and did a road test to make sure everything was working properly.

The diagnostics showed no fault codes, the road test went smoothly considering the high mileage on the truck, and the external inspection showed that the transmission fluid was full. It was just a bit old and discolored, so it was definitely due for service. Everything seemed normal until our technician removed the transmission pan in order to clean the pan and replace the pan gasket. That’s when he noticed a piece of a broken snap ring in the pan. This was obviously cause for concern, so the next step was to remove the transmission and perform a full internal inspection.

The internal inspection revealed a broken overdrive snap ring and burnt direct clutches. Quite a few other parts like the torque converter showed significant wear and tear, as well. This was an interesting case because the transmission seemed to be running reasonably fine. However, it took the trained eye of a Ralph’s Transmission technician to discover there were bigger problems than originally thought. In the end, the best recommendation was to completely rebuild the transmission and replace any and all damaged components. It wasn’t exactly the news Troy wanted to hear after coming in for a standard transmission service, but it was the news he needed to hear. At Ralph’s, we’re always going to tell it like it is because we want our customers to be safe on the road and know exactly what’s going on with their transmissions.

“I would recommend this place for anybody that needs their transmission repaired or replaced,” Troy says. “They gave me a very reasonable quote put all upgraded parts in a completely rebuilt transmission all within 2 days. I am extremely happy with the work. The shop is immaculate, the employees are dressed very well and I was treated extremely well by the owner Mario.”

Ralph’s Transmission was able to rebuild the transmission in Troy’s diesel truck. We perform all transmission rebuilds in-house to make sure the work is done properly and that the transmission is running like new again once it is reinstalled in the vehicle. From there, we perform additional diagnostic tests, inspections and a final road test to confirm there are no further issues. Because we are so confident in our work, we back every rebuilt transmission with the Ralph’s Transmission 3 Year, 100,000 Mile Warranty.

“I’m extremely happy with my truck,” Troy adds. “It drives like it’s never driven before and I would highly recommend Ralph’s Transmission for anybody—especially with a Dodge transmission.”
